To pass a Vote of Thanks to the late Lord Mayor

Minutes:

Resolved unanimously – That this Court wishes to convey to –

Alderman Alan Colin Drake Yarrow

its sincere appreciation and thanks for the distinguished manner in which he has carried out the demanding role of Lord Mayor of the City of  London during the past year.

Throughout his Mayoralty, Alan has worked tirelessly to promote the City as a financial and professional services centre, both at home and overseas, championing throughout his motto for the year - Creating Wealth, Giving Time, Supporting People. His efforts have successfully informed a number of key initiatives aimed at promoting a better understanding of the positive role played by the financial and professional services industry and the City Giving Day has been an integral part of this, showcasing the wider social benefit generated by the extensive Corporate Social Responsibility and community involvement of City firms.

An extensive overseas programme during his time in Office, which resulted in the Lord Mayor visiting more than 25 countries, to regions including the Gulf, Latin America and Asia.  This programme has succeeded in fostering bilateral trade and good will, identifying commercial opportunities and, notably, deepening Commonwealth bonds – one of the key themes of the Mayoralty.

In addition to the overseas programme, Alan has also worked hard to support the financial and professional services industry in the United Kingdom with visits to a number of UK cities and the hosting of a number of inward visitors at Mansion House; as well as the very successful State Visits and Banquets for the Presidents of Mexico and China. Such a wide programme has placed huge demands on the Lord Mayor but he has met this challenge unfailingly, with good sense and good humour at all times.

Alan’s commitment and enthusiasm have also been unfailing in respect of his philanthropic work and his support for the Livery throughout the year.  The Lord Mayor’s Appeal has supported a number of charities including Scope and Mencap, both of which are very close to Alan and Gilly’s hearts.  Throughout this busy year, in all of his work, the Lord Mayor has received the unending support and commitment of the Lady Mayoress, Gilly, who has ensured that the Mayoralty was a real team effort.

In closing, in taking their leave of Alan Yarrow as the 687th Lord Mayor of this City, his colleagues sincerely hope that he, Gilly and the rest of the family will long retain many happy memories of a successful and fast-paced year in Office.
