The City of London protects and manages, by charitable trust, almost 11,000 acres of open spaces within and around the capital for the benefit of local communities and visitors. Coulsdon Common, part of the seven ‘City Commons’, is a 127 acre public open space located in south Croydon. It forms part of a larger area of open countryside within the London green belt that links London with the wider countryside of Surrey. It lies in the North Downs Natural Area and virtually all of it is a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (Site of Metropolitan Interest) for its chalk grassland and wood pasture habitats. The Coulsdon Common Consultative Committee provides a forum for local residents and users to comment upon both the management of Coulsdon Common and its neighbouring public open spaces: Kenley Common (with its World War II-era airfield), Riddlesdown, and Farthing Downs and New Hill.
