Alex Barr is a Member of the Court of Common Council and was elected in 2017. Alex is proud to serve as a Cordwainer Member, having been based in Cordwainer Ward for 14 years (more than half his working career) after he joined Aberdeen Asset Management, now Aberdeen Standard Investments, situated in Bow Churchyard in 2005.
An Investment Management veteran, Alex is well known across the industry having held senior portfolio management, leadership and oversight roles for a number of leading investment houses. In 2019 he re-joined Janus Henderson Investors (“JHI”) having started his investing career there in 1995. At JHI he manages a London-listed Investment Company specialising in Alternative investments. At Aberdeen he established Aberdeen’s Alternatives business, went on to become Head of Private Equity and managed Aberdeen Private Equity Fund Ltd. Prior to Aberdeen, Alex was at Deutsche Asset Management (formerly Morgan Grenfell), Henderson and Franklin Templeton. Alex has served on multiple governance and investment committees, chaired Aberdeen’s DC pension scheme, and sat for four years on the Investment Management Association’s Asset Management Committee.
Alex is former pupil of Queen Anne High School in Dunfermline, Fife, a graduate of Aberdeen University and has completed the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme, at Said Business School, University of Oxford. He is a member of the Cordwainer and Bread Street Ward Clubs, and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers.
