Alexander Robertson Martin Barr (Alderman)

Alex Barr is the Alderman for Cordwainer Ward, and previously represented this Ward as one its team of Common Councillors. He has a longstanding direct connection to Cordwainer, having been professionally based there for 15 years with Aberdeen Standard Investments (now abrdn).  

Alex has 30 years Investment Management experience and is a senior figure in the industry. He is Head of Sarasin Bread Street, the private markets investment arm of City based asset management group, Sarasin & Partners LLP, of which he is also a Partner. He has previously held global and investment leadership roles at Aberdeen, Deutsche Asset Management and Janus Henderson, having started his career with Franklin Templeton.  

Alex has served on and led multiple governance and investment structures, chaired Aberdeen’s award-winning DC pension scheme, and was active for four years on the UK Investment Association’s Asset Management Committee. He has chaired key Corporation of London committees including its Audit & Risk Committee and Police Pensions Board. 

A former pupil of Queen Anne High School in Fife, Alex is also a graduate of Aberdeen University and completed the inaugural Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme, at Said Business School, University of Oxford.
