Alderman Kawsar Zaman was elected as the Alderman for Bishopsgate in the City of London in September 2022, succeeding The Rt. Hon. Baroness Scotland KC, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth. He is The City’s first Alderman from a British Bangladeshi background. As well as representing businesses in Bishopsgate, he supports the Lord Mayor in promoting the Professional and Financial Services sector in the UK and globally.

 

By profession, Alderman Zaman is a practising Barrister at No5 Barristers’ Chambers in London specialising in Public, Regulatory and Employment Law. He is also a former solicitor at ‘Magic Circle’ law firms Clifford Chance LLP and Allen & Overy LLP, where he specialised in financial services regulatory law.

 

Alderman Zaman grew up in a Council Estate in the East End of London. As the youngest of seven siblings, he went to his local state comprehensive and was the first (along with his twin brother) in his family to go to university. He graduated with a First in Law from the London School of Economics (2HC Scholar), before completing the BCL at Oxford University (OCIS Scholar), and then the LLM at Harvard Law School (Fulbright Scholar).

 

He holds Board positions as an Honorary Member of the Honourable Artillery Company, a trustee of the Wembley National Stadium Trust, a trustee of the UK’s National Muslim War Memorial Trust and as a Governor at Morpeth Secondary School.

 

Alderman Zaman is currently a Visiting Lecturer in Law at the University of Law and a Guest Teacher in Law at the London School of Economics. In 2009, he was a Global Fellow of the Prime Minister.
